Having kids in the house can make you think twice before adding new decorative items. But if you do things right, your kids won’t stop you from decorating your dream house the way you desire!

With some home renovation techniques, you can make your living space kid-friendly without making it look like a daycare center. The thing is, you cannot stop your children from messing around. You just need to find a way to make the space safe and stylish.

Here are some kid-friendly home renovation ideas to improve your home decor game.

1. Add Multipurpose Furniture

Are you tired of your kids throwing their toys all around? Have you run out of space to store them while making them accessible to your children?

Well, you can consider sofas with a storage space inside. Ottomans are also a great option, as they have a hollow storage space. Such sofas are ideal for small spaces where you don’t have enough space for separate tables and shelves. When things are stored inside, your space will look clean and neat every time.

Apart from this, twin beds or built-in bunk beds can save a lot of space if you have two children. These beds are a game-changer when it comes to styling the room while making it functional. Also, your children will be excited to experience sleeping in their new beds.

If you consider keeping simple beds in the house, a great technique is to put large storage shelves under them. This is especially useful with beds with an upholstered design and enough space to accommodate a storage shelf under them.

Note: While adding new furniture, make sure that it has rounded edges to prevent your kids from hurting themselves while playing. Also, sofas and seats with padding give a more comfortable feel.

2. Prefer Durable Materials

While your kids are more likely to strip things off and damage items, you should still opt for durable material. It not only adds a fresh look and style to your home but can also withstand wear and tear with time.

Having leather sofas is a great idea because leather is easy to clean. Fabric sofa covers, including velvet, can get dirty easily and are very difficult to clean and wipe off spills.

Similarly, wooden furniture and items made of metal can stand the test of time. Looking for a plastic table and chairs might not be a good option. They don’t add enough style and will break easily with time.

Note: Most materials, like plastic, can also be harmful. Make sure you keep furniture and items that are safe for children.

3. Have High-Quality Flooring

Children frequently come in contact with the floor while playing. Your kids might have already destroyed your favorite carpets by spilling drinks and putting irremovable stains. Or, your hardwood flooring might have had several scratches.

If that’s the case, you need to switch to vinyl flooring. This kind of flooring is almost impossible to destroy and can stand the test of time.

For people who love carpets and rugs in the house, carpet tiles can fulfill your dream. They are easy to clean as you can take out a carpet tile and clean it. If the stain doesn’t come off, you can also replace the specific tile.

Note: Make sure that the flooring is slip-resistant. Otherwise, your kids will fall and hurt themselves while running around the house.

4. Implement The Open-Concept Layout

The open-concept floor plan is a unique and modern design frequently implemented in the modern space.

Going with no walls, especially in the kitchen, will make your life much easier as a parent. You want to keep an eye on your children even while cooking, right?

Well, a kitchen with no walls and an open space in the house will perfectly do this for you. Your kids will be able to play around in the house while you do your regular chores.

5. Combine Vibrant And Soft Shades

The paint is perhaps an important thing to consider while renovating your home. While kids like bright and vibrant shades, you can still blend in subtle shades in some portions of the house.

In the living room, you can opt for lighter shades like beige and brown. Such shades also give a relaxed feeling to children. However, if you have a separate play area for your children, consider covering the walls with bright colors like blue and yellow. Such colors can be uplifting and energizing for children.

Remember that your children’s preferences will change with time. If that’s the case, using wallpapers in the house can also be a good idea. Their unique designs and colors tend to attract children.

Note: A good idea is to use kid-friendly paint. Such interior paints are washable, and you can remove crayon stains from the wall.

6. Have A Kid-Friendly Bathroom

Sharing your bathroom with kids isn’t a friendly experience. So, it’s better to make a separate bathroom for your children and make things accessible for them.

Open and closed shelving units are a great idea. While your kids have access to their toothbrushes and other supplies, the closed units will allow you to store medicines and other items that the children shouldn’t reach.

For toddlers, a lower vanity is a good option. If you have children of different ages, you can keep a standard-size vanity and place stools. You can also consider installing two different vanity stations.

Apart from this, quartz countertops and anti-slip flooring should be considered. We also recommend placing large doormats that can attract excessive mud. In this way, the bathroom floor won’t get muddy and wet at the same time.

Note: To keep it safe and simple, it’s better to have the shower and bath on one side. You can divide this space with a glass wall from the rest of the bathroom.

7. Allow Natural Light To Come In

Natural light is important for children as it gives them a comfortable feeling while playing around. Therefore, you should opt for larger windows that allow plenty of sunlight to come in.

If you have separate play areas for kids, consider having an open space in that area where natural light can come in. You can also install large windows for sunlight to enter. Covering these windows with blinds will be a great idea, too.

To add style, you can also place the furniture in front of these windows so kids can sit and play while absorbing the sunlight.

Note: In places where light can enter through the windows, don’t put heavy curtains and drapes over them. Otherwise, they will block the light from entering.

8. Consider Accessibility

If your toddlers tend to throw things away and like picking up random things in the house, you need to consider the accessibility.

For this purpose, you can install cabinets and counters at a height your children cannot reach. Thus, these can be the ideal spot for storing wires, books, and other items hazardous to children’s health.

You can also keep items out of your children’s needs by locking them in cabinets.

The tables and counters at a lower height should only include children’s toys and books.

Conclusion

With these home renovation techniques, you can create a safe space for your children without limiting their playtime.

While your children play around the house, you can stay relaxed. They won’t mess up things, and even if they do, you can clean them easily!
